Premiere of the Sprint Relay on the European Orienteering Championships is past now.

The Russian team of Natalia Vinogradova, Gleb Tikhonov, Andrey Khramov and Galina Vinogradova took the first gold medal of EOC 2016.

A tight race in which the lead changed several times was decided on the last women´s leg when Maja Alm took a slower route choice, to the benefit of the Russian team. After disqualification of Sweden and Norway, the battle for medals lost its biggest favourites. Switzerland took bronze at the end ahead of Finland, and hosts Czech Republic were in 5th place.

The first leg of the race which took place in the small town of Bruntal started well for the winning team. Natalia Vinogradova took a small lead with Judith Wyder from Switzerland close behind. Both Gustav Bergman and Jonas Leandersson ran an impressive second, respective third leg for Sweden but then Helena Jansson missed a control and the Swedish team was disqualified. S?ren Bobach handed over to Maja Alm for Denmark 1.17 down, but it was immediately clear that Maja did not see this as an obstacle, and after very few controls she had caught up with the leaders. Maja Alm then began to pull away from the others but after her mistake, the winning run through the arena was led by Galina Vinogradova and the Russian team, with Denmark 14 seconds and Switzerland 27 seconds behind.
